University of Wisconsin-Madison
Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program

Nave Fast Track

This is a new program to assist Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies faculty in organizing scholarly visits to our campus.

The idea is to permit core and affiliated faculty to apply directly to the LACIS director for funding to bring in a visitor to campus whom the faculty member would not be able to bring under the existing guidelines. If an opportunity suddenly arises to bring in a speaker of exceptional scholarly merit, a sponsoring faculty member will now be able to fund the visit via an expedited application and approval process. Qualifying visitors will be scholars whose work on Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Iberian nations is of great distinction. They would be invited for a brief visit, in most cases not to exceed two days. While on campus they must lecture in a course, participate in a graduate seminar, or offer a brown-bag seminar or public lecture (all events open to the public, of course). The application process is simple: a letter of nomination, accompanied by the visitor's c.v. or academic biography.

The Director, whom the Nave Committee has authorized to make these decisions, will respond as quickly as possible. The Fast-Track Program is not intended to replace the two existing programs. Faculty are encouraged to continue submitting applications through the other two programs, particularly if the visit in question may be arranged with the normal amount of lead time.

In order to qualify for the Fast-Track Program, the visitor must be someone whose visit to the University of Wisconsin-Madison might not be realized if normal Nave procedures were followed. The Nave Committee has authorized a small expenditure this year for the Fast-Track Program. It will be reviewed at the end of the year, at which time a decision will be made on its future possibilities.

A final note: If you are thinking of bringing visitors from foreign countries, you should know that the State Department has relaxed requirements for the payment of honoraria. The new rules should make it easier to process payments to these visitors for travel and honoraria.
