Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad Santiago, Chile
Summer Study Abroad Program (PENDING FUNDING) in Chile in which Wisconsin K-12 teachers (Spanish and bilingual education) and school librarians, taught by Professor Cecilia Beuchat, will examine the importance of children's literature in examining cultural issues and its pedagogical benefits in language teaching. The dates above are tentative.

 

Teacher Institute: Human Rights and Historical Memory in Latin America
July 8-11, 2008 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

This workshop will examine the legacy of state terrorism in Latin America in the efforts of civil society and governments to come to terms wit the recent violent past. Sessions explore the experience of military dictatorship, attempts to secure justice for the victims of human rights abuses, and the literature, film, are and memorials which seek to commemorate the struggles and atrocities of those years. This program is geared towards seventh through twelfth grade teachers interested in incorporating these topics into their classrooms. Confirmed presenters include: Marjorie Agosin from Wellesley College (literature of human rights), Anne Hamilton from UW-Whitewater (film and the politics of memory), and Chuck Walter from the University of California-Davis (truth commission reports).

Workshop fee of $90 includes continental breakfasts, lunches, and materials. Dorm housing is available ($40/night). 1-3 graduate credits (History) available for additional cost through the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
