Non-UW Study Abroad Programs

If the UW does not offer a program in the country where you would like to study there are a huge variety of other study abroad options. In many cases you may apply for admission to the Study Abroad program offered by another College or University. You can also enroll directly in a foreign University independent of an official program.

Some organizations exist in order to facilitate this process, such as International Studies Abroad an agency that links you with schools in Mexico, Chile, Peru, Spain, Argentina, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.

The School for International Training (SIT) offers field based, experiential semester and long opportunities across Latin American. Program sites include Spain, Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and Peru.

Getting Academic Transfer Credit

The Office of Admissions has comprehensive information about choosing a study abroad program and obtaining transfer credit. Please refer to that site for forms and instructions. What follows is a brief summary.

It is advisable, but not required, to obtain preliminary course equivalency approval through The Office of International Academic Programsbefore you leave for your study abroad experience. This will expedite the process of getting credit when you return, and help you know what to expect. Fill out the Study Abroad Information Form and return it to the Office of Admissions on the third floor of the Red Gym. It should take about 10 days to get a response from them. Be aware that the deadline for submission of this form is August 1 for students studying abroad in the fall, December 1 for spring, and May 15 for summer. You may also check to see if your program has previously been approved for transfer credit by referring to the Programs Eligible for Transfer Credit list.

In general, college level courses taught at a degree granting institution and for which you can receive a formal transcript will count for some credit. Language courses at a higher level than those you have taken or tested out of at the UW will likely transfer. Other courses will transfer as elective credit, or may directly transfer if the course content is sufficiently similar to a course taught in Madison.

If a course counts for UW credit, and contains at least 25% content related to Latin America, the Caribbean, or the Iberian Peninsula, it may count towards your LACIS major. Please speak to your advisor for more information.
